Get Rid of Air Leaks Once and For All

Air leaks can zap your home of vital energy and increase your energy bill by 30 percent. Finding these energy-draining leaks—and sealing them—will make your home more energy efficient. Start by checking the following areas to see where you can save energy and money.

Begin a DIY assessment by inspecting the areas along the floor. Check to see if there are any gaps along the baseboard or edge. Next, check for leaks in the walls and ceiling.

Pay close attention to electrical outlets and switch plates. Also, touch the perimeters of drilled holes from phone and cable lines to feel for incoming air. Install insulated covers to keep out air.

Afterwards, test for leaks around windows, doors and pipes. Other areas to check include attic hatches, mail chutes and window or wall-mounted air conditioners. Use rubber or self-adhesive weatherproofing to stop drafts from coming through.

Finally, inspect vents, fans and the home’s exterior for cracks and holes. Seal all areas tightly with the appropriate weatherproofing material and notice how quickly the energy improves in your home.
